What should CNC machines look like in Industry 4.0?

By: Sergio Zarat do Couto 09/09/2019

Looking at the fundamentals of Industry 4.0 manufacturing, applied to CNC machines or any other type of machine, be they: chip starting, shaping or laser cutting, water, plasma, plastic and / or aluminum injection molding machines etc… that meet the requirements: connectivity, flexibility, speed, timing and intelligence.

Traditionally, CNC machines, although the second “C” meant computerized, have always been on the sidelines of direct administration or other ERP modules. These machines were never required to have a connected system with feedback that could be harnessed, such as knowledge, for real-time production management, a little intelligence they always had. The possibility of connecting to the company's ERP system is now mandatory basis in the view of Industry 4.0.

CNC or PLC machines will now, with integration and connection, report what they are doing in real time, how efficient they are, how well they are being used, what quality they can produce, early diagnostics of Problems for predictive and preventive maintenance through warning alarms, process anomaly, finally, if stopped, why stopped? If your optimal status is to be working too close to the scheduled available time.
