Sports needs universal standards

5:19 a.m. EDT, August 11, 2011 SOUTH BEND --
Quality counts at the grocery store.
Pick up two pieces of meat. One is marked “USDA approved.”
One isn’t. Which one is more likely to get bagged at
the checkout lane? Why couldn’t it be the same
for athletics? Pick a sport.
From the youth level on up, there are leagues
and camps and special facilities and travel teams
and many other forms of instructional avenues.
Which ones are good? Which ones teach proven methods?
Which ones possess professional credibility of
both the instruction and the way the organization functions?
Almost every segment of corporate America has a set
of quality standards.
The American Society for Quality is a group that
certifies those assurances through the oversight
of experts in each field.
