When is industrial espionage not industrial espionage?

For most people the word spy conjures up images of the Cold War and is the stuff of James Bond and John Le Carre, but these days spies are more commonly found within businesses, hunting out the latest technological innovation. Such was the recent case with Renault, or so they thought.
At the beginning of the year sinister reports emerged of a Chinese industrial espionage ring that had stolen sensitive information surrounding Renault’s new electrical vehicle technology. This led to the dismissal of three senior Renault executives, despite them denying any involvement.
