How to Take Control of an Audit
Away from the Auditors
Alan S. Bunker
Abstract
Management audits, inspections, and evaluations are unpleasant, but they can produce useful results if properly controlled. This article presents a comprehensive approach to planning and managing an audit from the auditee’s point of view. The steps to take in preparing for the audit are detailed, and methods for setting the tone of the audit and taking the initiative away from the auditors are presented. Common mistakes in
controlling auditors are discussed along with defensive techniques for neutralizing over-aggressive and biased auditors. The correct techniques for handling exit meetings and audit findings are explained, and auditee follow-up actions are recommended. Special sections are included on Auditee Etiquette, Auditor Etiquette, The Three Types of Auditors, and The Auditor’s
Dilemma.
